Current Members of the Drunken Philosophers are:
Chris (Treasurer)
Preferred book genre: Horror, Thrillers and Fantasy Fiction My books of choice are horror, thrillers and fantasy fiction. I do also read the occasional biography and true stories. A book has to grip me from the first chapters, plenty of action and not pages of discription as these will only make me skim read in order to get back to the action. The book club does get me reading books that are out of the norm for me and some of these I'm enjoying. Darren
Preferred book genre: Crime, thrillers. My interests in book reading started in April 2005 while on holiday. No real favourites but enjoy crime thrillers. Dawn - Proxy Member
Preferred book genre: Modern Classics, Traditional Novels, Chick-li Favourite authors: Daphne Du Maurier, Mark Haddon, Alice Seabold, Sophie Kinsella I tend to pick books about women, families and relationships. They're not always chick-lit but you can't beat curling up with a Shopaholic book! I never go for sci-fi, crime or fantasy so hopefully Drunken Philosophers will make me try something new. Gemma - Proxy Member
Preferred book genre: Chick Lit, True Life Stories and Biographies Favourite authors: Chris Manby, Cecilia Ahern, Torey Hayden and Virginia Andrews
I’ll read almost anything as long as I can understand the storyline (thus making Science Fiction books possibly my last choice!). However, I’ve recently started choosing my books by the picture on the jacket, which is a bit worrying! Time to expand my mind, I think…. I’m hoping to be introduced to some new genres through the Drunken Philosophers’. John E
Preferred book genre: Sci-Fi, Action Thrillers, Historical Fiction Favourite Authors: Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, Alistair McClean I'm the newest full member of the club and have recently started reading novels again. This has meant that I have read some books I would not normally pick up with variable opinions. My preference is for books with a strong storyline, preferrably action, and with characters who develop in the story. I have a dislike for "chick lit" and weak storylines. I very much enjoy the social aspect of the club and the book analysis. John M
Preferred book genre: Science Fiction, Violent Thrillers, Escapism Adventure, Biographies Favourite Authors: Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, Lee Child, Peter O'Donnell, Richard Stark, John Sandford, Mark Burnell
I am the grandaddy of the group. A book has to be interesting in the first few chapters to keep me interested. The group thinks that i dislike women authors, and to a certain degree I agree with them though I think I should refine that to "women authors who write for women". I enjoy KELLY ARMSTRONG, OCTAVIA BUTLER, ANNE MACCAFFRY and others. When it is my turn to choose a book, the group know it is likely to be SF and it gives me a problem picking something they might enjoy. Ryan
Preferred books Thriller, Crime, Autobiographies, Factual books
When I first started reading at school I read the usual horror books by Stephen King, James Herbert and Dean Koonz. But now prefer to read books that are more believable. Certain factual books also interest me such as books on the two world wars. I do not have any favourite authors as such as I read such a wide range of authors. Joining the Drunken Philosophers book club has subjected me to books that I would never have read before. Unfortunately some have been hard work and I've not enjoyed at all. It is nice to meet up once a month to go though the chosen book.
Sara (Club Chairperson)
Favourite authors: Janet Evanovich, Terry Pratchett, Lee Child, Michael Connelly, Dean Koontz, Harlan Cobern, Kelley Armstrong, Laurel K Hamilton, Emily Barr- i could go on for ever I enjoy reading a large variety of fiction books, Chick Lit, Horrors, Thrillers, Crime & Fantasy in short almost anything (although I draw the line at romance or country & western or heavy Sci Fi). The main thing is that a book has to grab me in the first few chapters (although I finish almost every book I start). Likes: Science Fiction, Satire, Political, Historical, Modern Classics (e.g. authors such as Martin Amis, Julian Barnes) Dislikes: superficial chick-lit. Yvonne (Website Administrator)
Preferred book genre: Horror, Fantasy, Paranormal Favourite Authors: Kelley Armstrong, Katie MacAlister, Clive Barker, Stephen King, Ken Follett I generally prefer horror or paranormal fiction. However, since joining the Drunken Philosophers' I've been exposed to other novels and authors I would not necessary have thought to read. I also enjoy non-fiction science books, but education/reference material is not permitted as reading material here. Zoe (Club Secretary)
Preferred book genre: Girlie Books Favourite Authors: Sophie Kinsella, Cathy Kelly, Dan Brown My favourite books are very girlie but since joining the book club I have enjoyed a vast variety (i.e. sci-fi, horror). This has definately opened my eyes up to different authors and I always look forward to the next book. I always pick women authors to see whether John M will read them! |
